Josh Gordon came roaring out into the XFL season with six receptions, including a touchdown catch. It looked like NFL scouts would be ready to fill the Seattle Sea Dragon arena last week. Coaches were beginning to fantasize what their team would look like this fall with the addition. Those inflated fantasies lost their air quickly. He was only targeted twice this past weekend. He only managed to reel in one for the books. That is a far cry from his second year in the NFL.
Great Second Year
in 2013, when he led the league with 1646 receiving yards and was a first team All-Pro. The extremely talented Cleveland Brown draft pick from Baylor needed only 14 games to be the tops in the NFL, as he violated the league substance-abuse policy and was suspended for part of the season. After several years of arrests, rehabilitations, and reinstatements applied for, approved and denied, Gordon ended his career with the Browns and found his way to the New England Patriots. Pats coach Bill Belichick always seems to have a soft spot for helping talented, but troubled players, gave Gordon another chance to stay in the league.
Bouncing Around
What seemed like a lucky break proved to be no help for the substance-abuse riddled Gordon. He stepped away from pro football again, while having a fantastic comeback year, just as the Patriots were about to finish their run to a Super Bowl LIII victory. He has been reinstated and suspended a few more times since then. Yet, he found his way on the Seattle Seahawks, Kansas City Chiefs and Tennessee Titans. A stint with the FCF Zappers of the Fan Controlled Football League and now the Sea Dragons. It kind of sums it up for an illustrious career that never unfolded.
