With the 2025 MLB regular season down to its final two games as of September 27, the playoff field is nearly set, but the drama is at a boiling point! The Los Angeles Dodgers have clinched the NL West division title, securing their spot. The Chicago Cubs and San Diego Padres have locked in wild card berths, joining the Milwaukee Brewers and Philadelphia Phillies as the NL’s postseason participants so far.
This leaves the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets in a do-or-die tie at 82-78 for the final NL wild card spot. The Reds control their own destiny and can clinch with a win over the Brewers and a Mets loss (or sweep the Brewers for outright control)
In the American League, the Boston Red Sox have clinched a wild card spot, joining the Seattle Mariners (AL West champions). The Blue Jays and Yankees have both clinched playoff spots, though the AL East title is still undecided (tied at 92-68, with Toronto holding the tiebreaker).
This sets up a high-stakes battles among the New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays, Cleveland Guardians, Detroit Tigers, and Houston Astros for the final division and wild card berths, with the Yankees surging on a 6-game win streak and 9-1 in their last 10. The Guardians, fresh off a 17-of-20 win surge, could clinch with a win or an Astros loss.
