Indiana football is looking to build on its Week 1 victory over Old Dominion. The #23 Indiana Hoosiers welcome Kennesaw State to Memorial Stadium this Saturday. The Owls nearly stunned Wake Forest on the road last week, falling 10-9. Both teams enter Week 2 with plenty to prove as Indiana looks to sharpen its play before Big Ten competition, while KSU aims to score a breakthrough win against a Power Four opponent.
Building on a Solid Start
The Hoosiers controlled nearly every statistical category in the opener. Yet, they still left plenty of points on the field, something head coach Curt Cignetti and his staff have emphasized cleaning up before the home crowd sees them again. Cignetti admitted afterward that it felt like “35 points were left on the field,” with missed reads, blocking breakdowns, and a pair of costly drops wiping away what could have been a blowout win.
Indiana Offense
In his debut as Indiana’s quarterback, Fernando Mendoza provided stability. He threw for 193 yards on 18 of 31 passing and adding a five yard rushing score. The Hoosiers’ ground game was the real difference. They piled up 309 rushing yards behind transfers Roman Hemby (110 yards) and Kaelon Black (92 yards, 1 TD). The special teams also shined with Jonathan Brady’s 91 yard punt return for a touchdown.
Indiana Defense
The defense also had a rollercoaster outing in the opener. Old Dominion quarterback Colton Joseph stunned IU with a 75-yard touchdown run on the first snap of the season. However, Indiana forced three interceptions and limited ODU to just 96 yards passing. Colton Joseph’s 179 rushing yards exposed some vulnerability to mobile playmakers. Linebacker Aiden Fisher has been vocal this week about the need to tighten up communication and eliminate the explosive breakdowns that marred what was otherwise a strong performance.
Kennesaw State
Kennesaw State will look to stress those same areas. The Owls play an uptempo, no huddle spread offense that aims to wear down defenses and prevent substitutions. Their opening drive at Wake Forest was a 10-play, 75-yard march in just over three minutes. This may be a preview of the pace Indiana will have to contend with. Cignetti described it as “warp speed” and noted that the challenge will be getting calls in quickly and keeping contain on Williams when plays break down.
Offensively, quarterback Dexter Williams II had a strong debut. He set a school record for passing yards in a first start (149) while also adding 44 rushing yards. His top target, Gabriel Benyard, broke 100 yards receiving for the third time in his career. On the ground, Coleman Bennett (66 yards, 1 TD) provided early momentum. Missed kicks proved costly in the one point defeat.
Kennesaw State’s defense turned heads in its narrow loss at Wake Forest, holding the Demon Deacons to 10 points and forcing seven consecutive punts during one stretch. The Owls’ front generated four sacks and seven tackles for loss. Baron Hopson led the charge with 11 tackles.
The Plot Thickens
The Owls’ disciplined, swarming defense will be tested against Indiana’s physical run game. If KSU can limit Hemby and Black on the ground, they’ll force Mendoza into more passing situations. On the flip side, Indiana’s defense will need to tighten up against dual threat quarterbacks after struggling to contain ODU’s Colton Joseph. Williams’ mobility could create opportunities if the Hoosiers are not careful.
Saturday also carries a subplot: Williams facing his old program. The quarterback spent four years at Indiana, making a pair of starts before transferring to Kennesaw State. His familiarity with Memorial Stadium could add extra juice to a matchup already notable for being the Owls’ first against a Big Ten opponent.
Indiana has the talent edge across the board, but the Hoosiers cannot afford another sloppy red zone performance. As Wake Forest found out, Kennesaw State’s defense is capable of frustrating bigger programs. However, sustaining drives against Indiana’s aggressive front seven will be the challenge. Expect the Owls to compete early, but the Hoosiers’ depth and rushing attack should wear them down as the game progresses.
Prediction: Indiana 34, Kennesaw State 6
