Trey Lance to Start Hall of Fame Game for Chargers

Trey Lance is set to start at quarterback for the Los Angeles Chargers in tonight’s Hall of Fame Game against the Detroit Lions. Lance joined the team in April 2025 on a one-year deal. He is competing with Taylor Heinicke for the backup role behind Justin Herbert.

Fresh Start in Los Angeles

After being traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 2023 and seeing limited playing time, Lance arrived in L.A. this offseason looking to reset his NFL career. With Justin Herbert firmly in place as the starter, Lance’s performance in the preseason will be key in determining his role as a backup or potential trade piece.

Career Overview

Drafted third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the 49ers. Limited action, injuries, and competition led to a trade to the Dallas Cowboys before joining the Chargers this season.

Total NFL experience: 12 games played, five starts, 1,063 passing yards, 5 TDs, 4 interceptions, with 276 rushing yards and one rushing TD.

Coaching Eyes on Data

Jim Harbaugh and the Chargers’ staff have emphasized performance tracking during camp. Using wearables and film analysis, they’ll evaluate Lance’s physical output, reaction times, and consistency in execution. These metrics factor into roster decisions.

The Stakes

Tonight is a major opportunity for Lance to prove his value as a viable NFL quarterback. If he performs well, he could solidify himself as QB2 or even spark interest from other teams around the league.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8:00 PM ET in Canton, Ohio.
