Rare 1952 Mickey Mantle Card Heads To Auction After Record $12.6 Million Sale

One of the most iconic baseball cards in sports history is heading to auction with bidding starting at just one dollar. Pristine Auction announced a 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle #311 card graded PSA 2 will be featured in a no reserve live auction on May 19.

The card comes from the legendary 1952 Topps baseball set and remains one of the most recognizable collectibles in the sports memorabilia industry.

According to PSA, 2,075 copies of the card have been graded. Only three PSA 10 versions and six PSA 9 copies currently exist.

The card being auctioned is one of 239 graded at the PSA 2 level.

In 2022, an SGC 9.5 version of the same card sold for $12.6 million, becoming one of the most expensive sports cards ever purchased.

“You grow up hearing about the warehouse purge, the barge, the ocean, and you think about all the ones that didn’t make it,” said Pristine Auction Founder Jared Kavlie.

The card’s rarity is tied to the famous “warehouse purge” story involving unsold 1952 Topps inventory reportedly dumped into the Atlantic Ocean decades ago.

The 1952 Topps release helped shape the modern sports card industry through its photography, autographs and statistical design elements that are still used today.

The Pristine Live! Elite auction broadcast begins May 19 at 8 p.m. Eastern, with the Mantle card expected to appear around 10 p.m.
